Man City battle to beat Hull

Manchester City overcame a spirited Hull City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to second-half goals from substitute Alvaro Negredo and Yaya Toure.
Fresh from losing to Cardiff City last weekend, the 2012 Premier League champions were again given a fright against a promoted club before eventually claiming a second win of the season.
In a lively start, Hulls should have taken the lead after seven minutes when Sone Aluko burst clean through, but he scuffed his shot wide when he could have rounded Joe Hart.
The Tigers then had the ball in the net four minutes later, but Danny Graham's clinical first-time finish from Robbie Brady's delicious cross was rightly ruled out for offside.
The hosts responded with Joleon Lescott's header forcing a reaction stop from Allan McGregor before Robert Koren's volley whistled just wide at the opposite end.
Manuel Pellegrini brought on Negredo at half-time for Edin Dzeko and he decision was rewarded on 65 minutes when the summer signing headed home Pablo Zabaleta's deep cross.
Hull refused to give up, but the game was put beyond their reach in the final minute when Toure curled a sumptuous free-kick over the wall and off the underside of the bar.
The home side were slow out of the blocks and Hull took advantage of their lethargy, frustrating their opponents with their determination to defend strongly and chase everything.
Hart, under scrutiny for club and country after an indifferent start to the season, seemed uncertain as Hull made an early move into the box but Zabaleta cleared the danger.
Graham's pass on seven minutes took a fortunate ricochet off Matija Nastasic and sent Aluko clear, but he squandered the glorious opportunity after reaching the edge of the area unchallenged.
It sparked a lively passage of play and the in-form McGregor saved superbly at his near post from a Dzeko header at a corner.
On-loan Sunderland striker Graham was then marginally offside when connecting with Brady's ball into the box, while McGregor was in action again moments later, tipping over a powerful Lescott header from a delicate David Silva cross.
Manchester City were unable to impose themselves and frustration among the fans was evident, even as early as the 30-minute mark.
Sergio Aguero weaved his way through the Hull defence with a typical jinking run but then lifted the ball into McGregor's arms.
Pellegrini attempted to inject his side with fresh life at the start of the second half, sending on summer signing Negredo in place of Dzeko.
Yet it took Negredo some time to find his radar, with his first contribution being to head a long way wide from a Silva cross three minutes after coming on.
They finally produced some quality to break the deadlock with a good attack down the right in the 65th minute.
Zabaleta got behind the defence and whipped an inviting cross for Negredo, who moved into space and leapt high to plant a firm header past McGregor.
The goal appeared to do the job for the home side and they then played out until the final whistle. They sat back and looked to strike on the break but they were again unable to muster much to worry Hull.
The visitors pressed until the end and they tried to have one last crack, but Hart punched a Tom Huddlestone free-kick away convincingly and then cleared an Ahmed Elmohamady cross.
And the points were safe in the final minute when substitute Samir Nasri was fouled on the edge of the box and Toure stepped up to curl in a superb free-kick, despite Elmohamady tracking back to the goal-line.

Tomic rebuff inspired Evans

Dan Evans has said being told he wasn't good enough to practice with Bernard Tomic inspired him to victory over the Australian in the second-round of the US Open.
The British number three, ranked 179 in the world, recovered from a set and a break down to defeat Tomic 1-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
Speaking after the win, Evans revealed he was due to practice with Tomic at the Masters tournament in Miami last year only to be told to leave by the Australian's father John.
"I was there playing qualifiers," said Evans. "His dad sort of fobbed me off and said I wasn't good enough to practise with him. I remembered that.
"We went to practice, it was all booked. I got to the court. His dad said, 'No, no, he's a qualifier, I'm not hitting with you.' It was a bit embarrassing."
Tomic, who is ranked 127 places higher than Evans at 52, said afterwards: "It wasn't nerves. I was pretty relaxed. He just played so slow, so strange, that I basically did what he did. I wasn't very good at it, was I?"
Evans defeated 11th seed Kei Nishikori in the first round after coming through three qualifying matches to take his place in the US Open for the first time in his career.
The 23-year-old from Birmingham is guaranteed a £60,000 payout for reaching the third round and will now face 19th seed Tommy Robredo from Spain.

Mourinho upbeat on chances

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is confident his team can match European champions Bayern Munich in Friday night's UEFA Super Cup clash - but refused to fan the flames of his rivalry with Pep Guardiola.
The pair were fierce competitors in La Liga as respective head coaches of Barcelona and Real Madrid but the Spaniard came out on top, Mourinho winning just three times in 15 games.
He disputed his poor record against Guardiola on Thursday, before relenting and turning his focus to the teams rather than the personalities.
"Your statistics are wrong and very wrong," Mourinho told a reporter. "But I don't want to discuss that. Because it's not important. It's wrong.
"Go there and see what happened with Inter in the Champions League semi-final. I won the Spanish Cup final in Valencia, I won the Super Cup in Spain. I was champion in Spain. I won the match for the title in Barcelona with Real Madrid.
"Maybe you are right and I am wrong. But I don't care. It's not important.
"It's about a Super Cup where the European champion is playing against the Europa League champion.
"Pep is not European champion and I'm not Europa League champion. We just coach now the European champion and the Europa League champion. This is not about us. It's about Chelsea and Bayern."
Mourinho said he was sure of a competitive match at the Stadion Eden.
"It's good for us," he added. "Before we start the Champions League, it's very good to play with Bayern.
"I don't want players to feel that because we were successful in the Europa League, you can keep the same level and you can be successful in the Champions League, because it's a different planet.
"What I really feel is that in spite of a difference in experience between the two teams and the stability Bayern has - because over the last years they were basically the same team, the same players - we can compete against them.

Ronaldo Albanian who embraced what respect in prison

The story of Ronald Shqiptarit Rybak. He lives in the U.S., was sentenced to two days in jail only because he has embraced his idol Cristiano Ronaldo. Seeing how close was his hero, Rybak could not contain itself: he ran on the field, even though it is forbidden, knelt before Cristianos and then hugged her. Ronaldo initially appeared surprised, but it did please his fans, he also embraced. A nice scene but it is unacceptable for people to make ensure the game. McIlroy targets big finish

Rory McIlroy is determined to finish a disappointing season with a flourish as he prepares for the defence of his Deutsche Bank Championship title.
The 24-year-old carded a pair of 67s over the weekend at TPC Boston last year to pip Louis Oosthuizen by a shot, and he then clinched the BMW Championship title six days later.
But he has yet to record a victory this season and is currently languishing at 36th in the FexExCup standings, and missing the cut in Boston could eliminate him from the final two events of the play-offs.
"These next few events are a good opportunity to get something good out of the season," said McIlroy, who has slipped from first to fourth in the world rankings.
The two-time major champion has at least shown an improvement in form over the last two months, finishing eighth at the PGA Championship and 19th at The Barclays last week, including a second round of 65.
"It feels much better," McIlroy said when asked to compare his game now to two months ago.
"I've got the ball under control. I'm not as comfortable with my game as I was this time last year, but I'm in enough control that if I get on a nice run I can do well these next few events."
World No 1 and FedEx Cup leader Tiger Woods is set to compete in Boston despite the back injury which literally brought him to his knees in the final round last week.
Woods pulled out of a charity event organised by friend and former Stanford team-mate Notah Begay on Wednesday but was fit enough to take his place in the pre-tournament pro-am.
Ian Poulter needs a strong week in Boston to remain in the play-offs as he is currently 77th in the standings with only the top 70 advancing to the BMW Championship in Chicago.
The top 30 after that event will then play for the FedEx Cup and the $10m bonus in the Tour Championship in Atlanta the following week.
Just 28 players in this week's 100-strong field have already secured a place in the BMW Championship, leaving 42 places up for grabs.

Podolski faces long spell out

Lukas Podolski will be out of action for up to 10 weeks after his hamstring injury proved worse than initially feared.
The Arsenal forward was stretchered off shortly after half-time during Tuesday's UEFA Champions League victory over Fenerbahce.
Arsene Wenger estimated a three-week absence for the German in the immediate aftermath of the 2-0 win, but further investigation has revealed a more significant injury.
"It is bad news about Lukas Podolski," Wenger said. "He will be out for eight to 10 weeks.
"His hamstring is much more damaged than we thought at the start. It is very disappointing and we have paid a very heavy price for that win. We have to be patient now."
The news is likely to intensify calls among Arsenal supporters for new recruits to be brought in before the transfer window closes on Monday.
Mikel Arteta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thomas Vermaelen and Abou Diaby are all out injured, and Wenger is still to spend a penny in transfer fees this summer despite the "escalation in financial firepower" reported by chief executive Ivan Gazidis back in June.
Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini are the only arrivals to date, and both were free agents.
Wenger has admitted defeat in his attempts to buy Luis Suarez from Liverpool while Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria - all reported targets - want to stay at the Bernabeu.
There is, at least, better news on the fitness of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere ahead of Sunday's north London derby with Tottenham.
Both midfielders finished the Fenerbahce game injured but, according to Wenger, their "bumps and bruises" will not keep them out against Spurs.

England issue Oval apology

The England team have apologised for their behaviour during their celebrations on the Oval pitch at the end of the fifth Ashes Test.
Members of the team were reported to have urinated on the pitch during their celebrations after completing a 3-0 Ashes series win over Australia.
Spinner Graeme Swann appeared to confirm the allegations in his newspaper column, and Surrey reported the incident to the ECB, claiming the governing body has promised to investigate.
The team has now issued an apology which read: "The England cricket team would like to state that during our celebrations after winning the Ashes at no time was there any intention to disrespect Surrey CCC, the Oval or anyone else involved in the game we love.
"As a team we pride ourselves on respecting all things cricket including the opposition and the grounds we play at. We got carried away amongst the euphoria of winning such a prestigious series and accept that some of our behaviour was inappropriate.
"If that has caused any offence to anyone we apologise for that and want to reassure people that it was a simple error of judgement more than anything else."
Australia legend Shane Warne describing the alleged actions as "crass" and "arrogant" and the issue became political, with Sports Minister Hugh Robertson telling the Daily Telegraph: "If it happened, it's not good behaviour."
Despite the apology T20 captain Stuart Broad - one of the players reported to have urinated on the pitch - is likely to face more questioning, in a press conference at lunchtime designated to preview the first NatWest Twenty20 international against Australia at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday.
Broad will be the first of England's Ashes winners to front the media since the alleged incident and subsequent apology, which comes after Monty Panesar was sacked by Sussex after being found guilty of urinating on a bouncer's head at a Brighton nightclub on August 5.

AVB: Bale may go 'very soon'

Gareth Bale's move to Real Madrid could happen "very soon" - but Spurs may fine him for failing to turn up to training, according to boss Andre Villas-Boas.
Villas-Boas said work is ongoing on the contracts, and added: "I'm not sure how long it is going to take. It can happen very, very soon, it could go to the last day (of the transfer window), it could happen in the next two days."
Bale is, according to Sky sources, "furious" with Spurs for delaying his move to Real and failed to report for training on Tuesday and Wednesday.
And whilst Villas-Boas is sympathetic about the delay, he says Bale's behaviour is "not correct" and is considering fining him.
Villas-Boas said: "He is involved in a big transfer move to Real Madrid and in the end if it happens, we wish him all the best - what he left here was great memories. But the fact that he hasn't turned up is not the correct behaviour...
"That is the position they (Bale and his representatives) chose to take and it's up to the club to decide if it's a fineable offence."
According to Sky Sports presenter Jim White, Bale was told last week that he could "say his goodbyes" to the rest of the Spurs squad and did that before flying to Spain for a short break.
Asked if he personally felt let down by Bale, Villas-Boas said: "No - I think he obviously had a great season. What is happening is a dream move for him.
"In the end there will be a three-way agreement. Tottenham will accept the biggest deal in world football. In the end I think, if Tottenham accepts it and everything goes all right it will be the end of the story."
Spurs were reportedly furious with Real for erecting a stage in their stadium at which they were hoping to unveil Bale on Tuesday.
And the Madrid giants had been selling shirts with Bale's name on the back - further antagonising Spurs - though they have now stopped doing that.
Villas-Boas was unfazed: "They can do whatever they want. Whether it was responsible or irresponsible, I really don't care."
He confirmed however that he plans to make signings of his own before Monday's deadline.
He has been linked with Roma's Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen of Ajax.
"I've told you we will continue strengthening the squad. We are looking at different positions to make stronger. Not only those players but other players as well and I think in the next couple of days you will see further new arrivals," he said.
One man Villas-Boas does not expect to sign is Juan Mata, who is being linked with a move away from Chelsea.
"First, Chelsea wouldn't sell to Tottenham in any way or form, as they think that we are title contenders," said Villas-Boas.
"Mata is a great, great player - player of the season last season - very, very important player for Chelsea. They're just not going to strengthen another team that, in their opinion, are rivals for the title."

Wenger: Care with Wilshere

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has urged England coach Roy Hodgson to manage Jack Wilshere's fitness carefully.
Wilshere is expected to be named in Hodgson's squad for next month's World Cup qualfiers with Moldova and Ukraine.
Wenger is cautious with Wilshere's fitness with the player having overcome a succession of long-standing ankle injuries and he insists the 21-year-old is not 100 per cent fit yet.
Wenger rested Wilshere during last weekend's 3-1 win over Fulham after successive starts in previous matches against Aston Villa and Fenerbahce, but he is set to return to the starting line-up for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League play-off second leg.
"It made sense to give him a breather because we're playing every three days at the moment," noted Wenger. "He is not 100 per cent yet, but he is 90 per cent.
"I am a bit cautious because he had a few surgeries. I don't want to make a mistake on the medical front and overuse him because the ankle is the most important part of a football player.
"I would be a bit more cautious (than with another player), until we feel he is completely free from any risk."
Wenger is aware of Wilshere's importance to England and he believes Hodgson should rest the midfielder against Moldova so that he is fully fit to take on Ukraine.
Smiling, Wenger said: "(The Ukraine fixture is) the key. So don't play him against Moldova.
"It's World Cup year but first England have to qualify and we now go into a really important period for England. It's an important year for every single player because they all want to go to the World Cup.
"If you have a good season you have a good chance to have a good the World Cup. So let's first have a good season."

Rooney rejects push for move

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will not be handing in a transfer request, according to Sky sources.
However, despite the chances of an Old Trafford exit receding with this latest development, some issues between the England star and the club remain unresolved.
Rooney was left "angered and confused" about his position at Old Trafford after manager David Moyes hinted the striker would not be his first choice this season, while he continues to be unhappy at claims at the end of last season from Sir Alex Ferguson that he'd submitted a transfer request.
He has though told friends he will not disrespect the club, the manager, the team or the fans by asking for a move.
Chelsea have failed with two bids for the England star and looked set for a third with manager Jose Mourinho saying on Monday night that Rooney had 48 hours to decide his future.
Following United and Chelsea's goalless draw, Mourinho said: "We are not so silly as to try to get a player from a big club, a club that doesn't sell what they don't want to sell; we are not so silly as to try to do something if somebody didn't start it.
"The person that started the story has to finish the story. For the good of everyone it is time to finish the story. One way or another he has to say 'I want to leave' or 'I want to stay'."
It has been reported that Chelsea have players such as Anzhi Makhachkala's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o on their radar and when asked about how long Mourinho was willing to wait before moving onto other targets, the Portuguese said: "Twenty-four hours, 48 hours."
Rooney looked determined on Monday night to cast aside the ongoing uncertainty over his future with a stirring display against Chelsea after making his first start in the United XI for four months.
His every move was cheered by the United faithful and Moyes, who has insisted throughout the summer that he would not sell the striker, said: "I was very pleased with his performance and I was very pleased with the reaction from the crowd.
"I think Wayne has a positive mind at the moment. I don't think he needs to change. I think his performance said enough. I think his actions showed what he thought."
Mourinho added: "Rooney was a real professional. He played for his club, played for the club that pays him, tried to win, tried to score. He was fantastic.
"After that, if he wants to leave, he has to say - or he decides now that he doesn't want to leave anymore. But I praise him. He played a fantastic match in these difficult circumstances.
"They gave him fantastic support, it was good, it was nice - very English."

Wenger won't reveal targets

Arsene Wenger was as secretive as ever when grilled about his transfer targets ahead of Arsenal's date with Fenerbahce.
Arsenal go into the second leg of their Champions League qualifier on Tuesday with free signing Yaya Sanogo still the only addition to the squad which squeezed into fourth place last season.
Real Madrid trio Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil are the latest names linked with the club, and Newcastle have rejected one bid for their France midfielder Yohan Cabaye.
But a guarded Wenger stonewalled at a press conference when asked to identify his targets, instead launching an animated defence of the side which won 3-0 in Turkey last week and registered a first league win of the season at Fulham on Saturday.
He said: "I will not give you any names because I think it would be unfair for the players and create some wrong hopes.
"You can see that many of the disputes you have all over the country are because managers speak about players. In our job it's just - be discrete and try to make things happen, that's what we try to do.
"You can come back to me and say 'yes, but you don't make things happen' but still most important is what happens on the football pitch. The rest? We work very hard on it."
Asked if he expected to sign anyone before the weekend he said: "I have no fixed day because the delays don't depend on us only. It's very difficult to predict.
"We have not a fixed number (of targets), I just think we are a bit short at the moment. The most important thing is to focus on the quality of the squad we have and to play the football we want to play.
"I am guided by my conscience to do as well as I can for this club and by the vision of the game I want to play.
"I feel with the players we have we can play the football we want to play, and I am a great admirer of the spirit and attitude of these players. They are special, and if i want to add something it has to be special.
"I still am optimistic and I hope I will not disappoint you!"

New suitors in Bale pursuit

Sky Sports sources understands Tottenham are considering offers for Gareth Bale from more than one club and insist they have yet to agree a deal with Real Madrid.
Real have been leading the chase to sign Bale all summer, but in a new twist to the transfer saga they face competition for the Welshman's signature.
Reports in Spain over the weekend suggested Real were finally edging nearer to sealing a world record deal for Bale - who is returning to the UK from Marbella today - with Tottenham reportedly ready to do a deal with the Spanish giants.
However, it has now emerged that no deal has been agreed between Tottenham and Real and that the White Hart Lane club are weighing up offers from other clubs.
Sky sources say enquiries were made a few weeks ago from an English club and two from Europe - but it's unknown whether those clubs made a formal offer for Bale.
And it is understood Bale himself is unaware of any other interest other than Real's.
Manchester United have been credited with an interest in Bale, but it remains to be seen if David Moyes' side are the ones who have entered the race for the 24-year-old.
Bale has missed Tottenham's opening two Premier League wins over Crystal Palace and Swansea with a minor injury and Andre Villas-Boas admitted after Sunday's game with Swansea that he wanted the saga to be resolved this week.
In the meantime Bale will return to training with Spurs on Tuesday.
