Silva likely to miss derby

Manuel Pellegrini believes David Silva and Micah Richards will not be fit in time for the first Manchester derby of the season on Sunday. Midfielder Silva has returned to training after a thigh strain, while defender Richards is also back on the training ground following a hamstring problem. But Vincent Kompany is expected to start after coming through the Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen with no reaction to his groin injury. "David Silva and Micah Richards are both back in training but Sunday is likely to come too soon for either to be involved in the squad," said City boss Pellegrini, who insists he is well aware of the importance of claiming local bragging rights. "I don't need to be here to know just how important this game is to everyone," he added. "I'm well aware. Football in England is different, I hope everyone enjoys it. It's a six-point game, these are two of the teams that will challenge. "It's important not to be under too much pressure. David Moyes will be feeling some pressure after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson, but some pressure is good. "Yes, I know he had a good record with Everton against City. But with Villarreal I have a good record against him." City have an identical record to United after taking seven points from their opening four games, the only surprise being a 3-2 defeat by newly-promoted Cardiff. Pellegrini added: "We have had a good start, but not as good as we want. We must improve every game, it's difficult to change our style and the way we play, but winning makes you improve and we need to improve many things."

McLaren open to Alonso deal

Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that he would like to sign Fernando Alonso for 2014 and refused to confirm that Jenson Button and Sergio Perez will continue to drive for the team next season. Although the Spaniard is contracted to Ferrari until 2016, Alonso's position at Ferrari has been cast in doubt after a couple of high-profile public spats with the team and the potentially-destabilising appointment of Kimi Raikkonen as his team-mate. Alonso's solitary season at McLaren in 2007 ended in bitter acrimony and a swift divorce, but the two perceived catalysts for the friction, Ron Dennis and Lewis Hamilton, are no longer based at McLaren, and, despite this year's downturn in form, the team have considerable appeal in the shape of Mercedes engines for 2014 and a long-term deal with Honda thereafter. While the prospect of Alonso opting out of Ferrari remains unlikely, Whitmarsh has reignited the F1 rumour mill by openly acknowledging that McLaren would welcome Alonso back with open arms if the Spaniard could be persuaded to return. "Yes, if I could," the McLaren chief confirmed to Sky Sports News when asked if he would bring the two-time World Champion back to Woking. "Most teams up and down the pitlane would happily sign Fernando Alonso, he's a very talented driver. "I expect our driver line up for next year to stay the same but we are open to anything and in the long-term he would be a great asset. "Fernando is in charge of his own destiny, but we'll see." On Thursday, both Button and Perez assured reporters that they would be staying on at McLaren. Button's reassurance was particularly emphatic with the 2009 World Champion telling Sky Sports News "it's done". Yet far from muting speculation, the absence of official confirmation from McLaren that both Button and Perez had signed contract extensions instead sparked a fresh wave of transfer gossip as talk of Alonso returning to McLaren swept up and down the paddock. With Whitmarsh now openly declaring his interest, the ball would now seem to have been firmly put back in Alonso's court. "It's wrong for me to comment on what's going on in Ferrari but people were surprised with the recruitment of Kimi, not because Kimi isn't massively talented or through surprise that Kimi would want to go to Ferrari, and one can see that it is an exciting line-up, but whether it is a sustainable line-up I don't know," Whitmarsh commented. "Let's be frank, people want to sign Fernando Alonso because he is one of the best motor-racing drivers in the world at the moment. He is an asset to any team. "In all probability, we will have the same line-up next year. Being realistic that's what I think will happen, but we'll see." But never say never in F1. After all, Raikkonen's return to Ferrari seemed all-but inconceivable just a month ago.

Nelson: Norton was so tough

Sky Sports' boxing expert Johnny Nelson says the late Ken Norton was a hugely popular and respected figure throughout the boxing world.

The former world heavyweight champion passed away at a care facility in Arizona on Wednesday at the age of 70, having suffered congestive heart failure.

The American great was involved in a string of memorable bouts, and was considered something of a bogeyman for the great Muhammad Ali.

The pair were involved in three epic fights, Norton winning the first on a split decision after breaking Ali's jaw, before Ali won the second, also on a split decision, and the third, when he was given a very controversial verdict.

Nelson described Norton as "tough, through and through, and very well-respected in the boxing world".

He added: "He was a bogeyman for a lot of fighters. He was very tough to dissect and get through so, unless you were an outstanding fighter, you struggled against him.

"He boxed the best, Larry Holmes, Earnie Shavers, Jimmy Young and, of course Ali and George Foreman. This guy was tough, an ex-marine.

"If you look on Twitter and the Internet, there are not many, if any, people who had a bad word to say about him.

"Ken Norton was the gatekeeper to the heavyweight division. If he boxed in today's era, he'd be a champion, without a doubt."

Norton utilised quite an unusual style and Nelson added: "It was sort of a cross-block style, very unconventional in regards to boxing so, if you had somebody like that in front of you, you thought 'this isn't what I've trained to try and get through'.

"Norton came in with that style, and he was very athletic with it as well, and very physical as well, so he could make it very hard for an opponent to figure him out and get the timing.

"Ali was one of the greatest fighters we've ever seen but he still struggled with this man and his speed, his jab, his style, his fitness.

"All of a sudden, Ali had to depend on his skill more than anything else.

"You kind of felt sorry for Norton because you thought 'you know what, you boxed Ali three times and they should have given you the mark on every occasion, because you made life hard for him'. It was close and they gave the nod to Ali."

Norton was also involved in a classic fight with Larry Holmes in 1978, losing his title on a split decision after an enthralling contest.

"One of the greatest heavyweight fights you could ever see," said Nelson. "15 rounds of an immense, class fight, and it was the passing of the baton. That fight had everything, it was second to none."

Jose confident of progress

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remains confident that his side will qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, despite their loss at home to Basel.

The Swiss side came from a goal behind to win 2-1 on Wednesday night, ending the Blues' 29-match unbeaten home run in Champions League group-stage matches.

Mourinho's men had been seen as hot favourites to qualify from a group which also includes Steaua Bucharest and Schalke but they now have work to do after the unexpected setback.

However, Mourinho said: "The objective of finishing in the top two in the group phase and to go to the next stage of the Champions League is an objective that is not lost - far from it.

"It's an objective we're going to fight for and it's an objective that I believe very, very much that we're going to achieve.

"We lost three points that we must get somewhere. We must get them, (from) Basel, or Schalke, or Bucharest, or all of them, or some of them.

"Normally you have to win the matches at home and get a few points away.

"Now we must win six points at home, Schalke and Steaua, but we have also to win points away. Probably we have to go to win at Basel to compensate for the defeat."

Mourinho insists he is happy with his striking options and says he is expecting improvement from new-boy Samuel Eto'o, who has arrived from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

"The sharpness, that click to score, we have to wait," said Mourinho. "But he's a great player and he will score goals."

Former Footballer of the world, Ronaldinho has finally fix his teeth. It has now become one of the players with the best smile in the world. 33-year-old visited a dental clinic in which he performed the aesthetic intervention. Jose Mourinho insisted that Chelsea's chances

Jose Mourinho insisted he was not obsessed with winning the Champions League with Chelsea ahead of kicking off this season's group stages at home to Basel tonight.
Mourinho won the European Cup as boss with Porto and Internazionale but failed to reach the continent's holy grail in his previous stint at Stamford Bridge as well as in his three years in charge of Real Madrid.
However, the Portuguese claimed it was more of a dream now, than an obsession, to win it again with the Londoners.
"Let's see what happens. I have to focus not on the past but on the future.
"There's no obsession for me with this competition. No obsession for Chelsea. But I want to win it for a third time, and I want Chelsea to win it for a second time.
"This is the beginning of a process with us and the Champions League.
"We made history by winning it two seasons ago. Last year we made history by being the only champions eliminated from the group stage after six matches, and we ended up in a competition we didn't want to play in.
"This season we have some players with different experience, but the potential to win it. "We have to build a team full of talented players without the experience and the football philosophy born of having worked together for a long time.
"Basel are a very difficult opponent, they've beaten Manchester United and Tottenham in the last two years. Chelsea had a dream and that came true by winning the Champions League. If you win it once you dream about winning it twice.
"The first objective of this team has to be a process which ends with an identity, a philosophy and a style of play.
"I had a fantastic time here before and most of the people I worked with are still here. The fans have given me everything."
Mourinho appears to be tempering expectations six years on from the end to his first spell as boss, by speaking of the need to nurture young talent.
Ahead of the Rosenberg clash which precipitated his sacking in 2007, Mourinho delivered a cryptic message about eggs - interpreted as a parting shot at Roman Abramovich and the owner's recruitment policy.
Asked what his eggs are like now, Mourinho said: "Beautiful young eggs, eggs that need a mum, in this case a dad, to take care of them.
"And one day we'll arrive in a moment when the weather changes, the sun rises, we break the eggs and the eggs are ready to go for life at the top level."
Basel boss Murat Yakin says his side are underdogs, despite having a good record against English clubs, helping to knock out Manchester United from the 2011/12 Champions League and eliminating Tottenham from the Europa League last term.
"Chelsea is the clear favourite," Yakin said. "We've got Schalke and (Steaua) Bucharest in this group. We'll be playing for second place with these two teams."

United reveal record revenue

Manchester United have announced record annual revenue, rising by 13.4% to £363.2million for the year to June 30, 2013.

With new deals being announced on almost a weekly basis, it is no surprise that commercial revenues have risen a huge 29.7% to £152.5m for the year ended June 30, 2013.

It is the most significant rise in the 13.4% overall increase in turnover to a club record of £363.2m. The club's debt has fallen by 10.9% to £389.2million.

The adjusted profit for the period is £17.2m.

Wages have risen 11.6% to £180.5m, partly as a result of the club taking on more staff to work on its new digital operation, but also an increase in player salaries.

United have reported a rise in sponsorship revenue alone of 44.1% to £90.9m.

However, broadcast revenue dipped 2.3% to £101.6m as United gained only a 25% share of Champions League revenue paid to England's four competing clubs last season, due to a second-place finish behind Manchester City in the previous campaign.

An increase in matchday revenues of 10.5% to £109.1m was mainly due to Old Trafford being a host Olympic venue, while the club confirmed "exceptional items" costs of £6.2m were partly due to costs incurred with the flotation in New York, but also contracts of coaching staff - Mike Phelan, Rene Meulensteen and Eric Steele - being paid up following the summer departure of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was also stated in the results that net finance increased £21.3m to £70.8m, primarily due to a £22m premium paid to buy back some of its bonds, which will save interest payments in future years.

The impressive commercial results come as United are explaining their troublesome transfer window to supporters, with communications director Phil Townsend insisting funds were available to Moyes, even though he only ended up signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton.

"The club has always backed the manager in the transfer market, as Sir Alex (Ferguson) has said on many occasions and it will continue to do so," said Townsend in a letter to fans who wrote to United for an explanation of what appeared an underperforming transfer window.

"The club has demonstrated its belief in, and commitment to, David Moyes through the award of a six-year contract.

"Allowing him to shape the future Manchester United team is a long term project not an eight-week panic.

"He must be given time to assess his new squad and come to his own decisions on which players he feels will strengthen it.

"Additional resources were there to add to that but it was not possible to agree with other clubs for the right players to leave.

"The key point there is that the players we buy have to be the right ones for Manchester United; not just any player."

Pellegrini: No Kompany risks

Manuel Pellegrini is poised to welcome back skipper Vincent Kompany for Manchester City's Champions League game against Czech side Viktoria Plzen, live on Sky Sports.

The defender, who has not played since suffering a groin injury in the opening game of the season, has travelled with the squad ahead of the Group D encounter.

Pelligrini had previously admitted that he hoped to welcome Kompany back for next weekend's derby against Manchester United.

But it now seems he could be back in action sooner than expected although Pellegrini was at pains to stress he would not take any unnecessary risks with the Manchester City captain's fitness.

"Vincent has worked with us normally for the last two days," Pellegrini said at a pre-match press conference at the Doosan Arena.

"We will see if he is 100 per cent. If he is, of course he will play. We will talk with the doctor and decide.

"I think he will be 100 per cent, but if he is not he will not play.

"We have a very important match but we have other players if any are not 100 per cent."

Without Kompany, City have kept clean sheets in their last two games leading Pellegrini to play down the impact of the Belgian's absence.

"Vincent is a very important player for us. He has been injured for about one month.

"But without Vincent, except for the game against Cardiff, the defence played very well. We have had three clean sheets.

"Vincent is very important but we have a squad. We have replacements for any player who is injured."

Pellegrini also revealed that City go into their opening fixture of this season's Champions League with the objective of taking all three points.

"Of course we have to win this game. It is very important to start the group winning the first game," he said.

"But the Champions League is never easy. If we think we have weak teams in our group we are making a big mistake.

"Plzen are a very good team. I know they are a team that have not lost in the last 13 or games and are the champions in the Czech league.

"It will not be easy but we will try to continue to the last 16."

United wait on Welbeck, Jones

Manchester United manager David Moyes will give late fitness tests to Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones before finalising his line-up for tonight's Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

England striker Welbeck is suffering from a knee injury while Jones is still struggling with the ankle injury he picked up in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the start of the month.

However, the Scot can again call on the services of midfielder Shinji Kagawa who has recovered from the bout of flu which saw him sit out the 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Leverkusen counterpart Sami Hyypia, whose side lie third in the Bundesliga after chalking up four wins from their opening five games, will check on the fitness of midfielder Lars Bender (hip) before naming his starting line-up.

But the former Liverpool defender will be unable to include Jens Hegeler and Gonzalo Castro after injury ruled the duo out of the Old Trafford showpiece.

Hyypia, who picked up the only red card of his career at the same ground 10 years ago, admits he is aware of United's threat but is hopeful his gameplan will see them take a positive result back to Germany.

"We know exactly what we will be up against at Old Trafford," said the Finn.

"However, we have to stop them getting into their rhythm and make sure they don't score in open play. Then we need to be very aware at set pieces."

Moyes wants action on diving

Manchester United manager David Moyes says he thinks retrospective punishment should be used as part of the effort to stop players from diving. Moyes confirmed that he has spoken to United winger Ashley Young, who was booked for simulation during the 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Young's booking has prompted much debate about the diving issue and Palace chairman Steve Parish thinks offenders should be sent off. And Moyes, who has always been a stern critic of diving, says he has left Young in no doubt about his feelings on the subject. But he also stressed that the diving incident had been dealt with correctly at the weekend by referee Jon Moss. "I've had a word with him (Young) privately and, as I said after the game, I've said for many years we should have retrospective video for diving," said Moyes. "I think that would help referees no end, as it's really difficult at times. It doesn't change my views, whether I'm at Everton or whether I'm at Manchester United. "We can make up all the things we like about punishment but the rules are there and the referees have got the rules they have to abide by. "The referee on Saturday did what he had to do, he gave him a yellow card. "The referee got it correct and he gave the punishment for it, so I don't see why the debate should go on any longer."

Khan keen to challenge Floyd

British fighter Amir Khan has taken to Twitter to express his eagerness to fight boxing's pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather next year.
Mayweather took his record to 45-0 with a polished points victory over Saul Alvarez at the weekend and his father, who also acts as his coach, said afterwards that he would like his son to fight Khan next.
And Khan tweeted on Monday morning: "Floyd Snr wants his son to face me. Let's get it on. I've never turned down any fight. Speed v speed."
However, Khan will first bid to become a two-weight world champion on 7 December when he challenges IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander.
And the 26-year-old's coach Virgil Hunter says Khan needs to emulate Mayweather's work ethic if he is to defeat Alexander.
"If he is going to be really competitive, he has to show the same dedication and desire Floyd Mayweather shows," Hunter told The Times. "If he doesn't, he will have a tough night.
"If he changes his ideas and really commits to boxing and really becomes driven to be great in the sport, then I think he could grow very quickly.
"Amir has a lot of potential and a lot of ability and he has to maximise what he has and make it his priority if he wants to be great.
"You can't take months off boxing, running here and there, and think you can come into an eight-week camp and perform at the best of your ability. You have to live the life.
"I am not afraid to tell him that, because I am trying to get the best out of him."

Kompany back in City squad

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has returned to the squad for their UEFA Champions League opener against Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday.
Kompany has missed City's last three matches with a groin injury but he has travelled with the team to the Czech Republic and his return would be a major boost for manager Manuel Pellegrini.
The City skipper hobbled off during their season-opening 4-0 victory at home to Newcastle and they have stuttered somewhat without him, a 3-2 loss at Cardiff and a 0-0 draw at Stoke sandwiching a 2-0 home win over Hull City.
And City are desperate to improve upon their recent efforts in the Champions League, having crashed out at the group stages in the last two seasons.
Since signing Kompany in 2008, City have won 55 per cent of the games he has played in the Premier League and Champions League.
Of the 39 games he has missed, City have won just 46 per cent, and they concede less than a goal a game with the Belgium international in the starting line-up, compared with 1.2 per game without him.
Coverage of Manchester City's clash with Viktoria Plzen is on Sky Sports 2 from 7pm on Tuesday night.

Serena reigns in New York

Serena Williams captured her fifth US Open title and 17th career Grand Slam singles crown after defeating Victoria Azarenka 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 in Sunday's final.
With her second title in a row at Flushing Meadows, the 31-year-old American became the oldest Open Era women's winner in US Open history, 293 days older than Australian Margaret Court when she set the prior mark in 1973, and the Open Era's third-oldest Grand Slam women's champion.
Heading into the contest in New York, the world No 1 hadn't lost a set in her previous six matches but was bothered by the brutal swirling wind and Azarenka's strong play.
Seemingly in control in the second set, Williams was surprisingly broken while serving for the match at 5-4 and 6-5.
After Azarenka took the tiebreaker, Williams threw her racket in disgust.
But she soon regained her composure in the third set, breaking for a 3-1 lead when Azarenka double-faulted before capturing the title on the second match point of a thrilling, two hour 45 minute final.
She jumped around the court in celebration as Azarenka sobbed into her towel, a beaten finalist on Arthur Ashe once again.
After her win, Williams said: "Victoria played unbelievable, and what a great match. Vika's such a great fighter and that's why she's been able to win multiple grand slams, so it was never over until match point."
Williams' success moved her to within one of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova's 18 slam crowns and level with Roger Federer.
She won $3.6 million, including a $1 million bonus for her success as the leading player of the American hard-court season.
She is the first top-seeded champion since Justine Henin in 2007 and the first to defend the women's crown since Kim Clijsters in 2010.
Azarenka conceded the better player had won, saying: "It is a tough loss. I gave it my all, we showed our hearts, we fought, but it was well deserved and congratulations Serena."

Frank assessment of Ukraine

Frank Lampard believes Ukraine will provide a much stronger test than Moldova when the two sides meet in a vital World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
England are top of Group H but Ukraine are only three points behind and finish off their qualifying campaign against bottom side San Marino whilst Roy Hodgson's side still have to play second placed Montenegro.
Lampard is expected to earn his 100th cap in Kiev but is solely focused on getting a result that will take England closer to the finals in Brazil.
"By hook or by crook we have to perform, we have to work hard, we have to play well and we have to get the result," he told Sky Sports News.
"They're a good team, we can't underestimate them, they've got fantastic talent. Going forward, and defensively, they're a very good unit.
"We need to go on Tuesday night and try and get that result and put it in our own hands, that's all you can ask for with two home games coming up after that.
"We're very focused on what we've got to do. People can easily dismiss a group when they don't see a Spain or Germany sitting in it but we were aware that there were a few strong teams in there.
"I have been very impressed with them," he said. "They had a bad start to the group but against us they played with a lot of talent, they have a lot of technical ability and pace on the wings.
"I don't think we were at our best that night but to not lose when you're not at your best is a good thing. We'll go there bearing in mind they're a strong team but confident in our own abilities. We've got the team to get a result, without a doubt."

Getoar what makes

Ukraine 'better than England'

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk believes Ukraine are "more of a team" than England, particularly with Roy Hodgson's men "weakened".
Ukraine captain Tymoshchuk will lead his side into battle in Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier in Kiev knowing victory will lift them above the Three Lions to the top of Group H.
The Ukrainians will be hoping it is third time lucky against England after losing 1-0 to them in Donetsk at Euro 2012 - when Marko Devic's shot crossed the line, only to be disallowed - and conceding a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Wembley last September.
Tymoshchuk, who moved from Bayern Munich to Zenit St Petersburg in the summer, is the only member of the Ukraine squad to ply his trade outside of his homeland.
Although he acknowledges coach Mykhaylo Fomenko's party is short on star names, he is confident of claiming a crucial victory.
"We do not have the big names that England have, but we have very good players," he said.
"The truth is that the big English names - like Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard - have had lots of success and won many trophies for their clubs but for whatever reason, they cannot do it with their country.
"England might have names that all football fans know around Europe, but Ukraine are better."
Since losing 1-0 at home to Montenegro last October, Ukraine have won seven of their eight fixtures, conceding just two goals. In Lviv on Friday night, they warmed up for the clash with England by putting nine goals past San Marino.
Tymoshchuk added: "We are more balanced and when you see us play, we look more of a team than England - more like we are in tune with each other.
"That is why there is real belief within the squad that we can qualify for Brazil."
Wayne Rooney netted the only goal in the Group D clash between the two nations at last year's European Championship, and Tymoshchuk is relieved to see him missing.
"England have some big injuries - and none bigger than Rooney," said the 34-year-old.
"He is the player England look at to win them games - and we can't say that we are unhappy he won't be playing. It takes away England's main threat - and that is a big thing for us.
"That is not their only injury as well - we must take advantage of that. It is a weakened England team we will be facing, and it is the perfect opportunity for us put ourselves in a great position to qualify."

Nadal sets up Djokovic final

Rafael Nadal set up a dream US Open final against Novak Djokovic after he came through in straight sets against Richard Gasquet.
The world No 2 beat the eighth seed Gasquet for the 11th time in 11 meetings thanks to a 6-4 7-6 (1) 6-2 succes on Arthur Ashe Stadium in two hours and 21 minutes.
Nadal, the 2010 champion, dropped serve for the first time in his semi-final, ending a run of 73 perfect service games for the tournament and a run of 88 in total stretching back to the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals.
The Frenchman, whose second grand slam semi-final came six years after his first, could find no way to hurt the incredible Spaniard.
He had played back-to-back five-setters heading into the clash, but it was Nadal who swiftly broke Gasquet's first serve of the match, when he found the net.
He 12-time Grand Slam champion then held his serve with relative ease to take the first set in 43 minutes.
The second-seed was pushed hard by the astute Gasquet in the second set although Nadal again started by breaking him in the first game.
The 27-year-old fought back though, breaking to go 2-2 and eventually forcing a tiebreak.
But that decider was a one-sided affair which Gasquet started and ended with a double-fault as Nadal ran out 7-1 winner.
The French Open champion then broke in the second game of the third, with a magnificent forehand down the line.
And he took full command of the match which he secured when Gasquet ended the third set with two double faults on the final two points to extend his unbeaten run on hardcourts to 21 matches.
He will play in his third final at Flushing Meadows while Djokovic, who was the 2011 champion, is in his fourth successive final in New York and fifth in total on Monday night.
"It's just amazing," said Nadal. "After what happened last year, to have the chance to play in the final is a dream for me.
"Novak is an amazing competitor. He's been in the final here a lot of times, he's a great champion and it will be a tough final for me."

New Zealand made it three wins from three in the Rugby Championship with a 28-13 victory over Argentina in Hamilton on Saturday.
Kieran Read delivered an inspirational performance to break Argentina's spirit, demonstrating his handling skill, vision and patience in creating two tries at vital times to make light of difficult conditions caused by drizzle throughout the game.
The first, when the All Blacks were 7-3 down, saw him slip a sweet pass behind a defender to put half-back Aaron Smith in at the corner for a try.
Then, 13 minutes into the second half when the Pumas had crept back to 18-13 down, he charged down an attempted clearing kick, gathered the ball and took flight for the goal-line. He was dragged down short but the ball was spun superbly across the All Blacks backline and left wing Julian Savea crossed for the perfect try.
But if Read warranted exceptional praise, hard-tackling Richie McCaw and hard-running Steven Luatua, whose rapid rise continued, were not far behind. However, McCaw suffered a severe-looking injury in the 59th minute and limped from the ground.
Argentina had taken a surprise lead when a long pass from Dan Carter to centre Francis Saili was spilled. Prop Juan Figallo picked up the ball and it was quickly transferred to Leguizamon who was unchallenged to score.
Set back by that initial blow, New Zealand dominated the ball subsequently. Carter missed two early kicks at goal but he did land one to become the first player to pass 1,400 Test points.
Argentina ran into trouble in the 23rd minute when hooker Eusebio Guinazu was ruled to have committed a professional foul and was sin-binned.
New Zealand kicked to the corner and from the lineout drive number eight Read emerged off the back of the maul, charged around the blindside and flicked a miracle ball behind the Pumas defender, finding half-back Aaron Smith on the sideline to touch down.
Three minutes later Carter opened another gap and raced 40 metres downfield and went to ground. From the maul the ball was cleared for flanker Steven Luatua, who appeared to relish the confrontational nature of the Argentinian clean-out work around the breakdown area, to link with wing Ben Smith.
He centre-kicked and as the Pumas defenders failed to control the ball it was Aaron Smith who touched down for his second.
After a spell of early New Zealand pressure in the second half, the teams traded penalties and then Read made his dart for the line that led to Savea's try.
Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe's pull on Saili's shirt late on teed up Beauden Barrett to kick the penalty that ended any lingering Argentinian hopes.

Hodgson fumes over officials

Roy Hodgson saw England sweep aside Moldova at Wembley, but a booking for Danny Welbeck has handed him a selection headache.
The Three Lions never looked like slipping up in their latest 2014 World Cup qualifier, with skipper Steven Gerrard firing them in front after just 12 minutes.
Rickie Lambert nodded in a second before Welbeck completed the scoring with two strikes either side of the interval.
His two-goal salvo was, however, marred by a contentious caution which means the Manchester United forward must now sit out Tuesday's crucial trip to Ukraine.
Welbeck was booked for kicking the ball away moments after being flagged for offside.
Hodgson, who finds himself short on attacking options with Wayne Rooney unavailable and Daniel Sturridge nursing a knock, told Sky Sports: "My thoughts are really the same as everyone else's who have been involved in football, or followed football, or taken football seriously.
"It's almost unthinkable at that stage of the game, having made a 40-yard sprint and with maybe nothing more than a second between the ball arriving and striking it...It's not offside either. We've seen it and it wasn't even offside.
"To get the only yellow card of the game for that, and for that to then compound the yellow card he got in Montenegro - where he was fouled and we should have got a penalty, the referee didn't give it and gave him a yellow card instead - it doesn't get much more unfortunate than that.
"I think we're entitled to be aggrieved and I'm quite prepared to be bold and say that decision was, in my mind as a football person, totally incomprehensible."
On his depleted ranks, Hodgson added: "We said before these two games that we haven't been blessed with good fortune.
"To first lose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and then to lose Wayne Rooney and probably Daniel Sturridge, and now on top of that to lose Danny Welbeck, Glen Johnson and Phil Jones. Here we're talking about five players all of whom are very serious candidates for starting spots - some of them have never been outside of a starting spot.
"To go that wounded into such an important game, I can't say that's a positive thing and I can't make something so negative positive, but what I can say is that the group of players we have got and the ones that will play, they'll step up to the plate and they won't let us down.
"We can only hope that we won't be left regretting on Tuesday night the absence of some of these people
